Sparshott: Alice Harriet(t) & Minnie Edith

Hi Jo
According to my records there are a few ladies called Alice Sparshott but only one Alice Harriett Sparshott. (B: Q4 1887 Portsea; M: 1908 Q2 Portsea.)
Again, there are a few ladies called Minnie Sparshott but only one, Minnie Edith, born 1902 Q2 in Portsmouth, but this would have made her mother, Caroline Drew, over 50 when Minnie was born. Minnie Edith married in Q4 1923.
Perhaps Minnie Edith is of the generation after Alice Harriett?
If you find any more information I would be delighted to receive same.

Best regards
Peter McNulty

Alice Harriet(t) Sparshott

Dear Peter,
Lois Elsden has asked me to e-mail you about Alice Harriet(t) Sparshott. She was my maternal great grandmother, but my family know that Alice had a sister called Minnie Edith, and Lois does not know of a Minnie Edith. Do you have any more information if this is the case? There are no more Alice Sparshott's from about that time. Alice married William Henry Lock, who went down with his ship in WWI. They had three sons.
Thank you for your help in this matter,
Jo Parsons

Alice Harriet(t) Sparshott

Hi Lois

Alice Harriet(t) Sparshott was definitely the daughter of William & Caroline Sparshott. She is probably Bari's Great Aunt. She may have had a twin brother called George James.

I cannot find another Harriett born around the same time as this pair.

Hope this helps.

Best regards

Hello Peter, I'm Bari Sparshott's wife... and still doing the family tree!
I've had a communcation from a lady who's ancestor is an Alice Sparshott born 1887 in Portsmouth... Bari also has an Alice Sparshott born the same year, his father's aunt. We can't work out if it is the same person. We have no info on our Alice except she's the daughter of William Sparshott and Caroline Drew. My contact's Alice married a William Lock in 1908 and had three children. Do you know either of these Alices... do you know if they are the same person or two different people with the same name and born the same year?
Hope all is well with you and your family,
best wishes

8/3/2001 02:14 Sparshott Families Worldwide

I understand you are somewhat of a Sparshott geru. I think I descend from the same line as Carol whose name I just found on the Internet living close to one of my sons in southern Maryland. I will contact her tomorrow. I will include some information I compiled on the family and also just a little on an early Sparshott who came to Virginia very early.
I descend from Samuel Sparshott and Emma Bullock through the couples son Frankford Cullen. Frank was my great grandfather. I will send you what I put together earlier.

SPARSHOTT NOTES

The death certificate of Frankford C. Sparshott issued by the Maryland Department of Health # 03946 gives parental information on great granddaddy.
His father was Samuel born in England and mother [blank] Bullock, also born in England. The informant was Gordon Taylor. His birth year was given as 1860. [note birth was 1858] Place of burial was Mount Zion, Bethesda, MD

A study of the City Directories for Washington, DC was conducted for Samuel Sparshott. The results showed the family or at least Samuel came to DC in 1866. Last summer I located family events in Camden, New Jersey on the Family Search site and there were several birth events for Sparshotts in Camden suggesting the family came from England a full ten years before originally thought. [ my mother told me they came shortly before Frankford's birth and I had recorded it on my chart that I made at age 17] The marriage of Emma and Samuel may have occurred there also.

The 1866 Boyd's Washington and Georgetown Directory page 362 showed S[amuel] Sparshott printer 289 E. North . The 1867 directory showed Samuel J. was a printer and lived at 379 C. North. Charles was a coach maker and lived L North between Vermont Avenue and 15th West.
Samuel last appeared in the directories in 1873. Beginning in 1881 Emma appeared in the directory as the widow of Samuel J. Emma last appeared in 1891. Emma Sparshott died 4 April 1893 at 77 years of age. According to her death certificate # 89571 she was born in England; lived in DC for 30 years and died at 3220 Q Street N. W. She was buried in Glenwood Cemetery on 6 April. The undertaker was G. W. Wise of 2900 M Street.
I have a death certificate for a George F. Sparshott age 22 months. He was the son of Charles A. Sparshott a coach maker who first appeared in the city directories in 1867; a year after Samuel J. first appeared. The child, George F. was buried at Glenwood Cemetery Washington, DC. `

I have some baptismal and confirmation records from St. Colombo's Church, Washington, DC which give names of other Sparshotts. There was an Alfred H.
who died 5 July 1913 age 63 years who was probably the brother born in 1850.

Alice Cornelia Sparshott baptized 26 Nov 1916 2 ½ years buried 22 May 1919; born 15 October 1916.

Elsie Louise Sparshott b 8 June 1912; baptized 15 Sept 1912; d 20 July 1925.

Jeanette Moders Sparshott buried age 31 6 February 1920

Luther Newman Sparshott b 25 Sep. [year is cut off]; baptized 29 Nov 1914; confirmed 13 May 1928.

Lillie Virginia Sparshott b 10 Dec 1893; b. 14 April 1907 [by a Presbyterian minister] confirmed 1 May 1907.

F. C. Sparshott received by transfer from St. Stephens of the Incarnation 28 August 1941

Mrs. F. C. Sparshott d 9 February 1933.

Frankford Cullen Sparshott b. 30 August 1858 Camden, N. J.; confirmed 19 May
1912

Fannie Lee Sparshott confirmed 27 May 1910. [I wonder if this is Nannie?]

The four birth events for Sparshotts in Camden, New Jersey were:

Male b 21 Aug 1850 [probably Alfred H. who died in 1913]

Female b. 31 Aug 1853

Male b. 30 Aug 1858 [This is Frankford Cullen Sparshott]

Male b. 27 Nov 1860

I would like to correspond with you and hopefully locate Samuel's parents. I think the Charles that is in the city directory is too old to be a child of Samuel's therefore is probably a brother.
